  • tbh i think the funniest phenomena that's been happening in the last couple years is "youtuber, having gone too deep into the research hole, has been made an investigative journalist against their will"

  • Shout out to the guy who wanted to do some fun & silly little reviews but uncovered an illegal gambling operation

    (Review 2)

  • this guy started out poking fun at australian politicians and ended up investigating the firebombing of his own home, during which he uncovered connections between the same politician he was making fun of + major organized crime

  • JasperDasper started out just curious why everything had suddenly become about trans people and questioning some of the sources used in a book. He came out of it, 4 years later, with a 5 hour long video that connects all transphobia to less than 60 people. (I'm not joking. literally every single transphobic rhetoric and bill passed is because of these 50 or so people.)

If you wanna watch it I cannot recommend it enough; I just warn that it covers a LOT.

  • Oh, so that's why everyone was suddenly talking about homestuck again

  • For the record, I'm all the way around on morbid curiousity for this one. I'm one of the dweebs who will defend homestuck as a legitimately interesting and groundbreaking piece of art, but it's also just the last piece of art I would ever think is suitable for adaptation to a different medium. Any different medium. Few stories have ever been as much about their medium of presentation as homestuck is.

  • Making an animated version of homestuck is like trying to do House of Leaves as a prog rock concept album. It's like making the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy into a ballet. It's Twelve Angry Men in Tokusatsu. It's an artistic choice so self-evidently bad that merely the act of trying to pull it off is art in itself

  • And that's just based on the formal properties of the work - the bare fact that 80% of this story consists of teenagers sitting around having inane conversations about RPG mechanics in which the majority of the humour and characterization is conveyed via creative typography. I'm not even going to touch the fact that the whole thing is so intensely dated we should call it your mom

  • being anti ai is making me feel like in going insane. "you asked for thoughts about your characters backstory and i put it into chat gpt for ideas". studies have proven its making people dumber. "i asked ai to generate this meal plan". its causing water shortages where its data centers are built. "ill generate some pictures for the dnd campaign". its spreading misinformation. "meta, generate an image of this guy doing something stupid". its trained off stolen images, writing, video, audio. "i was talking with my snapchat ai-" theres no way to verify what its doing with the information it collects. "youtube is impletmenting ai based age verification". my work has an entire graphics media department and has still put ai generated motivational posters up everywhere. ai playlists. ai facial verification. google ai microsoft ai meta ai snapchat ai. everyone treats it as a novelty. every treats it as a mandatory part of life. am i the only one who sees it? am i paranoid? am i going insane? jesus fucking christ. if i have to hear one more "well at least-" "but it does-" "but you can-" im about to lose it. i shouldnt have to jump through hoops to avoid the evil machine. have you no principles? no goddamn spine? am i the weird one here?
